Henderson, the Reds captain, was withdrawn at half-time of England’s 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Sunday, with manager Gareth Southgate later revealing ‘tightness’ which would be looked in to.
It has now been confirmed the England star will not feature against Iceland on Wednesday evening, while Man City’s Raheem Sterling has also been sent back to his club for ‘further assessment’.
While Southgate will rue not having one of his key players available – even though the Nations League clash is a dead rubber – the real worry right now is for Jurgen Klopp.
The Liverpool boss is already facing a defensive injury crisis with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez possibly sidelined for the remainder of the season, and Trent Alexander-Arnold missing for the foreseeable future.
Henderson’s midfield partner Fabinho has filled in at centre-back recently, although he’s also been suffering from a thigh issue and Klopp would prefer not to drop him into the back-line if Henderson is already facing a period on the sidelines.
