Solskjaer challenges Man United strike trio to improve

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer say there has been improvement from young attacking trio Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood this season but he could bring in another forward to boost competition for places.

Rashford and Martial have contributed 19 goals each in all competitions while Greenwood has scored 12 but Solskjaer said the trio still have to earn their spot.

“You need competition for places at United. If you think you’ve got a divine right to be playing every game and are doing so well that we’re not going to look for players to replace you, you’re in the wrong place,” Solskjaer told reporters.

“We’ve generally got the opportunity to take a gander at improving, and in the event that they don’t… we may need to look elsewhere to show signs of improvement since we must be better.”

Solskjaer said he showed faith in his young strikers after allowing Romelu Lukaku to join Inter Milan in August.

“It was time to allow our forwards to feel that confidence and feel that demand of playing and being demanded to play every game,” Solskjaer added.

“In the end that’s how you get to another level, a different level … all three (Martial, Rashford and Greenwood) have had a good development this season but they can be so much better.”

United, who are sixth in the Premier League with 49 points, visit Brighton & Hove Albion later on Tuesday. Soccer prediction

Super League has cancelled this year’s Magic Weekend cause of ongoing restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The event, which sees all 12 sides play at the same venue over two days, was due to be held at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park on 23 and 24 May.

It was postponed in April, when the league said it hoped the event would take place later in the season.

The 2020 Super League season is due to resume behind closed doors on 2 August.

No matches have been played in the competition since 15 March.

Although there will be no Magic Weekend this season, a deal has been agreed in principle for it to return to Newcastle on 29 and 30 May 2021, with tickets purchased for this year remaining valid.

Magic Weekend has become one of rugby league’s major events in the calendar, aimed at growing the audience of the sport in new areas.

Since its first incarnation at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, the event has been played at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield, Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and, last year, Anfield in Liverpool.

The most successful venue for the competition in terms of attendance has been Newcastle, with a record cumulative crowd over the two days of 68,276 in 2016, and more than 40,000 attending in a single day the previous year.

Hull KR will play Toronto Wolfpack, champions St Helens will face Catalans Dragons and Huddersfield will take on Leeds all at the same as yet unnamed venue when Super League restarts in August as the sides play matches that were postponed before the season was suspended.Need to know more soccer news

Liverpool closing in on Premier League title

A look at what’s happening around European soccer today :

ENGLAND

It’s a matter of when, not if, Liverpool clinches its first English league title since 1990. It cannot come against Crystal Palace at Anfield, however, after the Reds were held by Everton on Sunday. Palace is the last visiting team to beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League, and that was in April 2017. Now Liverpool is chasing a 16th straight home win in the Premier League. No team has ever won all of its home matches in a single top-flight season. Fifth-place Manchester United and sixth-place Wolverhampton are tied on points heading into home games against Sheffield United and Bournemouth, respectively. Norwich is seven points adrift of safety with eight games left and desperately in need of a win at home to Everton. Second-to-last Aston Villa travels to Newcastle. The 2019/20 Premier League season resumes TODAY: Fixture dates, kick-off times and all you need to know

There has been no action in the English top-flight since early March, with all sport put on hold due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

We’re supposed to be in group stages of Euro 2020 now but that has been put back a year as domestic leagues are given extra time to finish their campaigns.

Here’s all you need to know about the restart…

When is the Premier League resuming?

Tonight! ‘Project Restart’ was initially planned for June 12, but clubs voted on Wednesday, June 17 for the season to resume after being given the green light by the government. There will be a number of strict social distancing guidelines in place, while no fans will be allowed in stadiums.

The action restarts with Aston Villa vs Sheffield United at 6pm and is followed by Manchester City vs Arsenal at 8.15pm.

Those are both rearranged games, and will mean all 20 clubs have played 29 matches heading into the weekend of June 19-21, when the rest of the top-flight will be in action once again.

There are 92 matches still to play of the 2019/20 season and every match will be live on TV and radio.

Italy’s Serie A will return on 20 June, the country’s sports minister Vincenzo Spadafora has confirmed.

Serie A was suspended on 9 March, with Juventus leading the table by a point with 12 rounds of matches remaining.

Players returned to individual training earlier this month before group sessions restarted this week.

“Being a big football fan like so many Italians, at the start it seemed strange to me that the season could be interrupted and suspended,” Conte said. “But obviously we found ourselves involved in this health, social and economic emergency. And I think everyone, even the most ardent fans, understood that there wasn’t any alternative.”

Before Conte’s nationally televised speech and news conference, health ministry figures indicated that Italy had seen its lowest day-to-day increase in deaths — 260 — since mid-March, during the first week of lockdown. Need to know more soccer info view Bet Advisor for more information and details

La Liga could resume with Betis-Sevilla behind closed doors derby on 11 June

La Liga chief Javier Tebas told Spanish TV he hoped the match can be “a tribute to all the people who have died”.

However, Tebas also warned footballers to “be careful with their actions” after four Sevilla players apologised for breaking rules on social gathering.

Ever Banega, Lucas Ocampos, Franco Vazquez and Luuk de Jong were pictured at a party at the weekend.

Spain has eased its strict lockdown rules, but gatherings of more than 10 people are still not allowed. Know more soccer info
